Hi and welcome to BalancedMe Nutrition!
My name is Meera and I am a BANT Registered Nutritional Therapist with specialist interest in nutritional support for mental wellbeing.
I believe that nutrition can be a powerful tool among others to help support mental health, and I have seen the huge benefits it can have.
I have always been interested in the brain and mental health, studying for a bachelors degree in Psychology at Durham University, and a Clinical Neuroscience masters degree at Kings College London. After my studies, I made an unconventional pivot towards corporate work for a few years.
During this time, I was diagnosed with severe anxiety and depression and started on the traditional treatment of antidepressants and talking therapy. This definitely helped, and so in 2015 I moved myself to Hong Kong with my company in search of a new adventure. I took myself off antidepressants, unsupervised by a doctor, which had huge consequences for my health.
Sadly I ended up becoming really unwell, unable to eat or drink very much due to the constant, nauseating, anxiety. I ended up having to fly home in an emergency to seek treatment once again.
It is no exaggeration to say I was at rock bottom. I had lost all my confidence and drive, and my anxiety was barely manageable. I had exhausted most of my options medically and my aunt, who studied nutrition, suggested I change my diet when she saw me have an almighty anxiety attack. At this point, and for most of my life, I really didn’t care what I ate. Nutrition to me was calories, carbohydrates and not much else.
A few really simple changes to my diet and understanding the mechanics of how nutrition benefits the mind and body finally put my recovery in the right direction: upwards.
Steadily, I regained my confidence, capacity for concentration and an ability to work and study. I initially took online courses in nutrition but my passion and enjoyment of nutritious food grew exponentially and I knew that I wanted to take this further. So, I built an entirely new purpose and retrained as a nutritional therapist at The Institute of Optimum Nutrition. I knew from the start I wanted to empower clients to use nutrition and lifestyle changes in order to regain emotional balance within themselves so that you are able to make the most out of life.
Whilst nutrition and lifestyle changes can seem daunting at first, I take you through the process at your pace.
Having a lifestyle that benefits your mental wellbeing needn’t be really restrictive, boring or socially awkward. I aim for you to not only having a balance within yourself, but find balance within your life so that you can use nutrition and lifestyle changes to support your mental wellbeing whilst also being able to enjoy life and be more productive.
If you would like to know more about how I work, please don’t hesitate to get in touch and see how we can work together.
